These would drive Zenith TV's with the 9-90 horizontal drive module crazy. Zenith came out with the fix as a "9-90-VCR" replacement module to correct the problem.

Those shadows around the television personalities in some shots.. I just recently started learning about the types of video tubes used in television cameras around the time the DuMont network existed. Splashy electrons or something, I only sort of skimmed videolabguy's video.

It seems as if Cable In the Classroom was nothing more than filler and PR more than the networks really developing good educational programming that is up to date. You could probably get just as good back then if you taped Discovery Channel, TLC, History Channel, PBS, or similar channels and fast forwarded through the ads. As to Channel One's Demise, I think it came down to the following: * Parents, Advocacy Groups, and Educators disliked the ads leading some high schools to remove Channel One and pressured some advertisers to not advertise on the show. Groups like Obligation Inc and Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood were behind this coalition. * In the mid to late 2000s, there was a shift in technology in schools. Back in the early days, most schools used TV/VCR carts and other analog media like slide projectors and reel to reel film projectors. So you could easily hook a VCR to the Channel One TV and show your educational video too which made a set for each room an advantage. Buttas the mid-to-late 2000s rolled on, as there was a shift towards internet streaming and Digital Presentation Capabilities like PowerPoint and the like, many schools abandoned their standard definition TV systems in favor of LCD Projectors, Smart Boards, Flatscreen TVs, and equipment that could display the higher resolutions of newer PC screens (Most standard definition TVs topped out at 720x480 interlaced or 320x240 non-interlaced. Channel One, for a little bit, partnered with Promethean Planet to bring its content to smart board systems, but this went away after a year. * The Switch to HDTV would require all the equipment for Channel One to be replaced. I suspect that Primedia, Zenick, and Houghlin Millfin Harcourt did not want to spend the money to upgrade the equipment in all the Channel One Schools. By this time, many schools were upgrading equipment all on their own to projectors. Eventually Channel One decided to throw in the towel and close down, and donated the old TV equipment to the schools passing he disposal cost on the school districts. *

Nope! Scrambled mode was wavy lines down the middle of the screen without sound and there were times when ONTV would come in clear for some time. I knew two people who subcribed to ONTV, one of them had Adults ONly as well, and would sometimes watch movies at their house. I remember seeing Magic (1978) and The Island (1980) and A Clockwork Orange (1971) with my friends. In South Florida you tunned your set to UHF channel 51 and then switched the nob from OFF to ONTV and then you watched movies on it. Fun stuff.

I must admit that I'm not familiar with VX VCR format. First time seeing it. The fact that it's actually working is amazing. The first consumer level VCR system that I know of is Video Cassette Recording (yes, that's it's official designation) from Phillips (1971). Don't know where you'll find the tapes for either of these beasts. I would certainly like to get my hands on U-Matic!

After overhauling a few of these machines, I can attest that the condition of the playback belt (the belt attached to the small DC motor underneath the mech) is extremely crucial to proper movement of the take-up reel as well as video (a loose belt will at best form snow on the top of the screen). I bet that if you were to take the bottom off of this unit and looked at that belt, that it's bent out of shape, and furthermore replacing it would cure the Auto-Stop issue and give a picture. (I explain in one of my Quasar vids that the belt should be tight enough to fit snuggly on the big pulley, then you'll need a dental pick to fit it around the motor pulley.) You can override the Auto-Stop by undoing the plug to the front panel and trick the machine there's a tape in by covering the slot on the left side of the tape detectors with your finger or something else opaque--this way, you can see what's spinning and what's not. You got this, Ben! I'd also be more than happy to help in bringing this machine back to life, should you need outside assistance. (Also been meaning to try a couple of idler tires I bought to see if they would work as replacements for the REW/FF idler tire, as they all seem to wear out on these.)

It was to talk about my experience with a famous broadcasting school up there of which I was kicked out of (long story, but in the end, my enrollment was doomed from the start), which I almost took them up on...but eventually fully chickened out of it because it was still too soon after the enrollment, and I didn't want to be seen or heard on the air about it. (That school was about as close as one could get to living under Stalinist Russia. Don't ask.)

I heard unplugging that cable from the front panel will disable the Auto-Stop. I haven’t had time to mess with mine though since the last video I did on it, have a ton of crap piled up right now.

You could always call Rick Thomas if you want to spend 3 grand and wait a year to get the unit back. Still it would be like new. Lol

fuzzy memories is the man. He's uncovered some great sports content. Few understand how mature the sports tape trading scene is. It's the golden standard of TV collecting. It's been a thing since the 90s. We have almost everything in the big three's network archives by paying people off or starting fake productions companies etc. If you find something significant and demand something like $1000, no worries, twenty tape traders will put there $50 in and pay up just as long as you use your TBC and we get a flash drive with the raw avi or mov. Don't get me wrong I'm not making an offer rather explaining to those whom think only concert tapes and horror host are the only things that have an underground cult following. 90% of commercials you see on YT from the mid 60s to 70s came directly off 2" that my compadres lied, cheat or stole from the big three networks.

Bugger. I was hoping you’d have better luck with it. Just for the record, this machine was repaired by someone for me at least two other times - it plays fine for him (I have the videos to prove it) and then when he sends it back it works for a bit and then starts randomly stopping. It is likely something related to that break as you noted - it’s just very persnickety and easily spooked like a cat on a cucumber farm. 😂 I wish you luck. At least you get “content” out of your frustrations. All I got was frustration. This format and machine seems to require the patience and grace of a monk. 😊
